Why Fig Tree Counselling?

The name Fig Tree Counselling is inspired by the concept of the trauma tree—a powerful metaphor in trauma-informed therapy. Like a tree, a person may appear to be functioning well on the outside, with leaves and branches that seem healthy and vibrant. But beneath the surface, in the root system, trauma and unmet needs may be deeply embedded and hidden from view.

The fig tree is known for having some of the deepest-reaching roots in the world, a fitting symbol for the depth of healing and self-understanding that therapeutic work can reach. True healing doesn’t just happen on the surface—it requires us to go beneath, to explore what’s buried in the soil of our experiences, our body, and our nervous system.

At Fig Tree Counselling, I believe that healing is a whole-body approach. It’s not just about managing symptoms, but gently tending to the roots: the unconscious patterns, emotional wounds, and embodied memories that shape how we live, relate, and feel. Like the fig tree, we are capable of strength, resilience, and growth—when our roots are acknowledged, nourished, and supported.
